  The Horses of Rockyhill

We love our dogs but love our horses just as much. Our lives are dedicated to the proper care and well being of both our small and large friends.

  • Sandy, Shari and Mark in Vacaville

We became interested in gaited horses a little over a year ago. These horses were bred to cover long distances very quickly and to be smooth to ride. Because they are so smooth and fast you can ride them for hours. Once you've ridden a gaited horse on the trail it's hard to ride a non-gaited horse.
Sandy is on her Tennessee Walker "Nevada ",Shari is on her Missouri Foxtrotter "Doodle" and I am on my Tennessee Walker "Jazz".

  • Doodle bowing.

Doodle ia a registered Missouri Foxtrotter. He is a Palomino gelding and is 15/3 to 16 hands tall and 9 1/2 years old. His registered name is Lad's Yankee Doodle Dandy and comes from a ranch in Texas. He is fast with long strides and loves to run.

  • Jazz head shot.

Jazz is a Tennessee Walker and is black in color. He is 15/1 to 15/2 hands tall and approx 13 years old. We don't know a lot about his backround but he is supposed to be registered even though we don't have his papers. He is extremely well trained but can be a grumpy old man just like me.

  • Nevada at trailer

Nevada is Sandy's Tennessee Walker. He is a Dun gelding and his registered name is Ghost in the Darkness. He is approx 15/1 hands tall and 9 1/2 years old.

  • Quick at training

Quick is one of the PMU foals we brought down from Canada when he was 5 months old. He is 3 1/2 years old now and has recently come back from 3 months of training. He is a Percheron Paint/Appaloosa cross and should mature between 16 and 17 hands tall. We have continued his training in the round pen and arena and he has been on the trails in Vacaville twice. We are very pleased with his progress. This horse was about as wild as they come when we got him.

  • Sandy and Spirit

Spirit is another PMU foal we brought in from Canada at 5 months old. She is a 2 year old Percheron/Paint cross. She has a superb temperament and did not mind at all when Sandy saddled her up and climbed on but since she has never had any formal training she had no idea what she was supposed to do. I think we will have to keep her and Quick so we can ride them together. They are both too slow to keep up with the gaited horses.

  • Kruze (7/6/03)

American Warmblood Gelding - 6 years old on 7/4/03
Kruz was accepted into the U.C. Davis riding program the summer of 2006 and now resides at the U.C.Davis stables.Shari raised Kruz from a baby and it was very hard for her to let him go but she thought this was best for him. Kruz had an extreme parrot mouth(overbite) and needs regular dental care witch he will receive at Davis.

  • Rena

    Quarter-Horse Mare - 26 years old.
Rena is retired and lives in our back corral.

  • ZZ and Mark at Roundup

With great sadness I had to put ZZ to sleep on Feb 9th 2003. He had been diagnosed with cancer about 6 months ago and finally lost the battle. Being involved with dogs for many years I have been there when many have passed on but ZZ was my first horse and this did not prepare me for what I had to do.

I feel very lucky to have known him and could not have asked for a better horse. He was full of personality and the sweetest horse I have ever been around. I always new he would take care of me when we were out riding. We enjoyed riding at the cattle roundups but my favorite place was on the beach near Bodega Bay.I think he enjoyed that the most also. Those are memories I will always cherish.

    Mark

  • Z.Z.

    Standardbred Gelding

  • Festus pictured at 22 years Put to rest March 27/03

Rest in peace. Festus would have been 38 years old on July 4th 2003. On March 27th 2003 He was put to rest after a horrible case of colic. Many people came to his aid over the last few weeks of his life to make his remaining days comfortable. He was a true American Quarter Horse and remained tough as nails until the end. He is remembered fondly by the Hughes and Drady family and many Festus supporters.
